For a farmer, there is nothing theoretical about this problem.

A crop is not merely a crop. It represents months of labour, money borrowed or invested, expectations about the harvest and, ultimately, a family's livelihood. When herds of nilgai enter fields and eat or trample crops, the economic loss can be devastating.

Studies and reports from different parts of India have documented significant crop damage caused by nilgai, and farmers in several states have demanded government intervention.

So yes, the farmer's concern is legitimate.

But while reading such a story, another question inevitably comes to mind:

Where are these animals supposed to go?

And that question changes the entire way we look at the problem.

The animal did not suddenly decide to become a farmer's enemy

Imagine, for a moment, that you are a nilgai.

For generations, your species has lived across landscapes consisting of scrublands, grasslands, forests and open spaces. Then, slowly, the landscape begins to change.

A road appears.

Then another.

A village expands.

A new housing colony comes up.

Fields become larger and more intensively cultivated.

A factory arrives.

A highway cuts through an old habitat.

Trees disappear.

Natural grasslands become construction sites.

And eventually, the places where your ancestors lived become fragmented pieces of land surrounded by human settlements and agriculture.

Then you discover something else.

The fields contain food.

And unlike natural vegetation, agricultural crops are often extraordinarily nutritious and available in abundance.

So you enter a field.

From the farmer's perspective, you are a crop destroyer.

From your perspective, you have simply found food in the landscape that humans have created.

That doesn't make the farmer's suffering any less real.

But it does make the situation considerably more complicated than saying:

"There are too many nilgai."

The irony of the "wildlife problem"

There is something deeply ironic about the phrase human-wildlife conflict.

In many cases, wildlife isn't invading some untouched human world.

Humans have expanded into landscapes that were already inhabited by wildlife.

We have divided their habitats into smaller and smaller fragments and then become surprised when animals cross the invisible boundaries we have created.

A nilgai doesn't understand that a particular piece of land is now someone's private agricultural property.

A leopard doesn't understand the concept of a village boundary.

An elephant doesn't know that a highway has been constructed across its traditional movement route.

A monkey doesn't understand that the forest where it once found food has become a residential colony.

The animal is responding to its environment.

And increasingly, we are the ones designing that environment.

And then comes the leopard

What makes the Una situation even more interesting is the observation that the decline in leopard numbers may be contributing to the problem.

At first glance, that might sound strange.

Why would fewer leopards mean more nilgai?

Because nature is not a collection of independent species. It is a system.

Predators influence prey populations.

Prey influence vegetation.

Vegetation influences herbivores.

Herbivores influence the landscape.

Everything is connected.

Remove one important component and the consequences can travel through the ecosystem.

So when the population of a predator declines, the animals that would naturally have been controlled by that predator can increase.

And then humans may suddenly discover that another species has become "too numerous."

But here is the uncomfortable question:

Who reduced the predator population in the first place?

If human activity contributed to the decline of predators through habitat destruction, hunting, conflict, roads, development or fragmentation, can we really look at the subsequent increase in herbivores as an entirely separate problem?

We keep removing pieces of nature and then complain when the system stops working

This may be one of the greatest ecological mistakes humans make.

We look at nature species by species.

We say:

"Leopards are dangerous."

So we reduce leopards.

Then we say:

"There are too many herbivores."

So we want to control herbivores.

Then we say:

"Forests are disappearing."

So we plant trees.

But an ecosystem is not a collection of individual items that can simply be added and removed like furniture from a room.

It is a network.

Remove a predator.

Fragment a forest.

Drain a wetland.

Destroy grassland.

Build a road.

Change a river.

Introduce intensive agriculture.

Increase human population.

And eventually the consequences begin appearing somewhere else.

Sometimes they appear as crop damage.

Sometimes as flooding.

Sometimes as human-wildlife conflict.

Sometimes as disappearing species.

And sometimes as climate-related disasters.

The farmer and the animal are actually victims of the same process

This is perhaps the most important point.

It is easy to create an argument in which the farmer is placed on one side and wildlife on the other.

But perhaps the farmer and the animal are not enemies at all.

Perhaps both are victims.

The farmer needs to protect his crop because his livelihood depends upon it.

The nilgai needs food because its survival depends upon it.

The farmer cannot simply say, "Let the animals eat the crop."

And the animal cannot understand, "This field belongs to someone else."

Both are responding rationally to their own needs.

The real problem lies somewhere above both of them:

the shrinking and changing ecological space in which both humans and wildlife are trying to survive.

We have created a strange world

Human beings are simultaneously destroying wildlife habitat and creating artificial food sources for wildlife.

We remove natural vegetation.

Then we cultivate enormous fields of crops.

We destroy wetlands.

Then we complain about waterlogging.

We cut forests.

Then we complain when animals enter villages.

We build roads through wildlife habitats.

Then we call roadkill an unfortunate accident.

We eliminate predators.

Then we wonder why prey populations become difficult to control.

We convert grasslands into farmland.

Then we become surprised when herbivores eat agricultural crops.

And perhaps the strangest part is that we often describe the resulting animals as menace.

The animal didn't create this landscape.

We did.

This does not mean farmers should simply accept crop losses

There is an important distinction here.

Recognising the ecological causes of the problem does not mean romanticising wildlife at the expense of farmers.

That would be equally unfair.

A farmer whose crop has been destroyed cannot be told:

"Don't worry, the nilgai was only looking for food."

That does not pay his bills.

Conservation cannot succeed by asking rural communities to bear all the financial costs of protecting wildlife.

If society wants wildlife to survive, society—and particularly governments—must help communities coexist with it.

That could mean better fencing, wildlife corridors, habitat restoration, compensation mechanisms, crop protection, scientific population management and better land-use planning.

The answer should be based on ecology rather than anger.

Perhaps the answer is not "How do we get rid of the nilgai?"

Perhaps the better question is:

"How do we redesign the landscape so that farmers and wildlife can both survive?"

That is a much harder question.

But it is also a much more intelligent one.

Instead of simply controlling animal populations, we need to understand why particular species are becoming concentrated in particular areas.

Are their natural habitats shrinking?

Are their predators disappearing?

Are food sources changing?

Are wildlife corridors being blocked?

Are agricultural practices unintentionally attracting them?

Are human settlements expanding into important habitats?

Are there ways of creating buffer zones between forests and agricultural land?

These are questions worth asking before reaching for the simplest solution.

We cannot fence the entire planet

There is also a practical lesson here.

Humanity cannot continue expanding indefinitely and assume that wildlife will somehow adapt forever.

There is a limit to how much habitat can be destroyed before ecological systems begin to break down.

We often talk about protecting forests because forests are visually impressive.

But grasslands, scrublands, wetlands, river systems and other less glamorous habitats are equally important.

A landscape doesn't have to look like a dense jungle to be valuable to wildlife.

And when these landscapes disappear, the animals don't necessarily disappear with them.

Sometimes they simply move closer to us.

That is when conflict begins.

The bigger tragedy: we are making the planet uncomfortable for ourselves too

There is another dimension to this story that goes beyond wildlife.

When we destroy natural ecosystems, we are not merely making life difficult for animals.

We are weakening the systems that support human civilisation.

Healthy ecosystems help regulate water.

They protect soil.

They support pollinators.

They store carbon.

They influence local climates.

They provide habitat for countless species.

They help maintain ecological balance.

When we damage these systems, we eventually experience the consequences ourselves.

Perhaps the ultimate irony is that humanity has spent centuries trying to conquer nature, only to discover that we cannot actually live outside it.

We are not separate from the ecosystem.

We are part of it.

Maybe the question we should ask is: who is actually invading whom?

When a nilgai enters a field, we immediately say:

"The animal has entered human territory."

But what if we reverse the question?

How much of that territory was once habitat used by wildlife?

How many forests have been cleared?

How many grasslands have been converted?

How many wildlife corridors have been blocked?

How many roads, buildings, industries and settlements have replaced natural habitats?

The answer will not absolve every wild animal of responsibility for damage.

But it should make us considerably more humble before blaming wildlife.

Nature doesn't take sides

Nature doesn't care whether we are farmers, industrialists, conservationists or politicians.

It simply operates according to ecological rules.

If predators disappear, prey populations can change.

If habitats shrink, animals move.

If food becomes scarce, animals search elsewhere.

If climate changes, species shift their ranges.

If ecosystems are fragmented, conflicts increase.

These are not moral decisions made by animals.

They are consequences.

And humans are increasingly becoming the architects of those consequences.

The real lesson from Una

The story of Una's farmers and the nilgai should therefore not become a simplistic story about "problem animals."

It should become a story about a broken relationship between human development and the natural world.

We absolutely must protect farmers from economic losses.

But simultaneously, we must ask why wildlife is increasingly being pushed into human-dominated landscapes.

We should protect predators rather than casually eliminate them.

We should preserve wildlife corridors.

We should restore degraded habitats.

We should make agriculture and conservation compatible.

We should compensate farmers when society asks them to live alongside wildlife.

And above all, we should stop thinking of nature as an obstacle to human development.

Because nature isn't standing in the way of our future.

Nature is the foundation of that future.

The nilgai did not choose to become a crop raider.

The leopard did not choose to disappear.

The forest did not choose to shrink.

The grassland did not choose to become a road.

Humans made those choices.

And now, increasingly, we are living with their consequences.

Perhaps the most uncomfortable truth is this:

We are not only making the planet unlivable for wildlife. We are slowly making it less livable for ourselves.

And if one day we find ourselves surrounded by concrete, facing water shortages, extreme weather, declining biodiversity, disappearing forests and increasingly frequent conflicts with wildlife, we should remember something very simple:
